China National Ethnic Song & Dance Ensemble “Carp Leaping over the Dragon Gate” / Dance Performance

The China National Ethnic Song & Dance Ensemble was established in 1952, with the aim of inheriting, promoting and developing the culture and art of ethnic minorities. As the only ethnic minority art performing troupe in China, it has performed in different countries and regions around the world during state visits, and is reputed as “the eternal flower of ethnic art”.

“Ox vs. Tiger” / Percussion Performance

Introduction: This piece is a highly ornamental classic repertoire of Chinese drum music. Through the three scenes of “meeting”, “playing” and “fighting”, it vividly shows the stubbornness of the ox and the mightiness of the tiger. The piece performed at this concert is a specially adapted six-person percussion version.

“Jasmine Flower” / Folk Ensemble

Adapted from Jiangsu folk song “Flower Tune”, the piece enjoys global fame with its distinct Chinese characteristics. Known for its elegant melodies, smooth fluctuations, and delicate but firm emotions, the song has become a symbol of Chinese culture, and was used by Giacomo Puccini, a world-renowned Italian composer, in the opera Turandot.

“Century·Fashion” / Chamber Music Performance

“Century·Fashion” is a quartet featuring Bayan accordion and string instrument created by composer Liu Hao in 2020. In the same year, he won the first place in the youth chamber music group of the 71st World Accordion Championships. The musical language of the whole piece combines artistic forms of traditional culture and folk culture, featuring both the classical elegance of traditional culture, and the fashion of modern world music (Piazzola), which contributes to its inclusive but unique style.

“Winter Olympics in the World of Ice and Snow” / Folk Ensemble

With a distinct theme, the piece features dynamic rhythms and beautiful melodies. While singing an ode to the great rivers and mountains of China, it also represents an endeavor to interpret the Olympic spirit and build a bridge of friendship with other countries in the world through Chinese music. The piece is a Chinese orchestra version specially adapted for the “Happy Chinese New Year” program. Pipa, erhu, guzheng, bamboo flute, sheng, percussion among other Chinese national musical instruments are used to convey the vigorous voice of China in the country’s own musical style.
