Chinese Shadow Play

Helsinki’s Chinese New Year now offers a chance to learn about Chinese shadow puppetry for the first time.

Shadow puppetry is one of the intangible cultural heritage practices listed by UNESCO. In shadow puppetry, stories are told by moving puppets made of leather or cardboard against an illuminated piece of fabric to create an illusion of moving figures.

The shadow puppet shows at Oodi will be performed by the Hongyu Shadow Puppet Troupe from Beijing. All the shows are classics of shadow puppetry.
